SMTP and CVP

In SMTP, the client sends a request to the server asking to send or receive an email. The email itself passes in the response, so the CVP server always performs checks on the response. The connection request/response process is:

1. Client to server (request)
2. Server to CVP (response)
3. CVP to Client (response)

SMPT - CVP Options

• Use CVP - enables the Content Vectoring Protocol. Select the CVP server from the drop-down menu.

  Note - Make sure the CVP server is already be defined as an OPSEC Application.

• CVP Server is allowed to modify content - configures the CVP server to inspect but not modify content. If this option is not selected and the CVP server discovers a problem, such as a virus, the email message or attachment will not be allowed.
• Reply Order - designates when the CVP server returns data to the Security Gateway security server. The CVP server checks the file one packet at a time. After the CVP server has inspected the whole file, it sends a Validation Result message to the security server. If the Validation Result is that the file is approved, the security server sends the file back to the Inspection module, which sends the file on to the client.
  • Return data after content is approved - The CVP server sends the file back security server after checking the whole file.
  • Return data before content is approved - The CVP server sends packets to the security server as soon as it checks them. This option gives better response times to users, but can also result in virus infected files being sent to the security server.
